Everyone is talking about social justice these days but no one US state is getting it right. The reasons are many and today we’re speaking with Brian Vicente, the lawyer who wrote Colorado’s groundbreaking 2012 legalization laws. For all of their foresight and mastery, those 8 year old laws also made no provision for social justice. In this interview Vicente talks about why that happened, what’s being done now to correct them, and the challenges of creating a regulated  industry that is fair and gives opportunity to all, especially those who have been disproportionately harmed by 60 year War on Drugs. The challenges are not what you think.

Vicente is a partner and founding member of the Denver-based law firm of Vicente Sederberg. As a result of Brian’s collaborative efforts with activists and strategists, Colorado  became the first state to make the possession, use, and regulated distribution of marijuana legal for adults. Vicente has assisted the government of Uruguay with adopting a fully regulated adult marijuana market and he serves as a formal advisor on marijuana policy to local, state, and national governments. He also serves as chair of the Committee for Responsible Regulation.
